One of the most common calls we get in Surrey: the dryer tumbles, but the clothes come out damp and cold. Before you call for repair, here are the five most common causes of a dryer with no heat — and what you can safely check yourself.
This is the number one cause. A packed lint filter — or lint built up in the exhaust hose behind the dryer — chokes airflow, and the dryer overheats and shuts off the heat as a safety measure. Pull the lint filter and clean it fully (not just a quick swipe — wash it with soap and water every few months, because fabric softener leaves an invisible film). Then pull the dryer out and check that the exhaust hose isn’t crushed or clogged.
Dryers have a small safety device called a thermal fuse. If the dryer overheats — usually because of the airflow problem above — the fuse blows and cuts power to the heating element. The dryer will still tumble, but with no heat. A blown fuse needs to be replaced, and the overheating cause needs to be found, or the new fuse will blow again too.
In electric dryers, a coiled heating element does the actual heating. These coils can burn out or break over time, especially in older machines. Signs: the dryer runs a full cycle with zero warmth, and clothes take two or three cycles to dry. Replacing the element is a routine repair.
The thermostat tells the heating element when to turn on and off. If it fails, the dryer may never heat at all — or it may overheat and then shut the heat off. A dryer that gets very hot and then goes cold mid-cycle often points here.
If you have a gas dryer, the problem may be the igniter, the gas valve coils, or the gas supply itself. Gas dryer repairs involve both gas and electricity, so this is not a do-it-yourself job — call a qualified technician.
If you’ve cleaned the filter, checked the hose, and the dryer still has no heat, the problem is inside the machine — and dryers run on 240 volts (or gas), so opening one up isn’t worth the risk. Most no-heat problems are fixed in a single visit: thermal fuses, elements, and thermostats are parts we carry.
